Dance class steps out in Edinburgh

Young children in Edinburgh can experience the very best in contemporary dance by attending one of the four weekly classes for under-fives in the city's new Dance Base National Centre for Dance in the Grassmarket. Based on the premise that all children love to run, jump, leap and move through space to music, or on their own, Creative Dance for Under 5s gives children the opportunity to express themselves through dance.

Based on the premise that all children love to run, jump, leap and move through space to music, or on their own, Creative Dance for Under 5s gives children the opportunity to express themselves through dance.

The children are not taught strict dance forms, but are encouraged to develop a love of dance from an early age.

A spokesman said, 'These classes direct their energy, teach them a new skill and boost their confidence. It is a fun way of developing a child's understanding of creativity, inspiring their physical development and promoting communication within a group.' Class teacher Michael Scott said, 'You would be amazed at what they can do. We do creative dance, which is an exploration of the body and shows children how their bodies use force, space and time. They gain confidence and develop the freedom to create their own dances.' As part of Dance Base's Outreach work, teachers are taking the Creative Dance for Under 5s programme into nurseries and creches all over Edinburgh and Lothian, and have been delighted with the results.
