Q I am pregnant. Am I entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay and is my employer obliged to pay it?

A If you become pregnant and you have been working for the same family for 26 weeks (six months) or more, prior to the 'notification week' (NW), you will qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP). The 'notification week' is 15 weeks before the birth is due. For example, if your baby is due on 28 May 2005, the latest possible start date with your current employer is 21 August 2004. If you qualify for SMP then it is your employer's statutory obligation to pay it.
