Seeking out new equipment and educational resources to tell you about is usually a very serious business, but we also have a few laughs along the way. For instance, who would have thought that toilet training products could be so entertaining - manufacturers are certainly doing their best to emphasise the fun aspects of this necessary stage of child development. The supreme example is the Potty Throne, which plays a royal fanfare when the child 'performs'. Find out more on page 14. Equally hilarious are the alternative fairy stories we review on page 26.

Equally hilarious are the alternative fairy stories we review on page 26.

There you can meet the witch implicated in the demise of Hansel and Gretel who claims she was framed, a vegetarian giant who has no intention of eating Jack, and Cinderboy - no prizes for guessing what that is all about! While in no way wishing to negate the value of traditional stories these contemporary versions will certainly give the children food for thought.

Back to the more serious stuff, we look at the best whiteboards for your particular setting (page 18), track down freebie material for out-of-school clubs on small budgets (page 29) and reflect on the very real value of playing board games despite the plethora of computer games (page 33).

We also have some really super prizes for you. The new Esprit Stroller would be a fabulous addition to any baby room and we have two to give away absolutely free. See page 11. We also have a brilliant collection of numeracy resources from BEAM Education. It's worth almost 200 but you could have it for the price of a stamp. Feeling lucky? Send in your entry now.

As this is the first issue of 2004 I hope it isn't too late to wish you a good year, with plenty of successful equipment shopping.
