This book is a timely contribution to the debate about appropriate early education and a balanced approach to what, when and how children learn, along with a positive role for adults as enablers rather than sources of pressure and direction.

The author explains the central ideas that inform the Steiner Waldorf approach (the first Steiner school was established for the children of workers at the Waldorf Astoria factory - hence 'Steiner Waldorf'). There is valuable material for any early years practitioner about the importance of genuine choice and self-direction for children. The positive rhythms of daily routine, the value placed on the senses and physical movement are all described and examples given from Steiner Waldorf settings around the world.
