Resources

Coloured paper, photograph of each child, glue, scissors, brushes, paint, real flowers of different sizes

Step by step

* Look at your collection of real flowers with the children. Discuss how they are all different sizes.

* Find out the heights of all the children. See if they can arrange themselves in order of height.

* Explain that they are going to make a flower that shows their height to display in a class garden.

* Print a background for the garden of green grass and blue sky.

* To make the flower you will need a portrait photograph of each child that can be cut into a circle. Cut petals out of coloured paper and arrange them around the outside of the photograph.

* Cut long thin strips of green paper to form the stem. Attach this to the flower and ensure that it is the same height as the child by asking them, in pairs, to lie down next to their flower and have their partner cut the stem to the correct height.

* Cut out leaves and attach to the stem.

* Place the flowers on to the garden display.
