Shops offer many opportunities to develop children's understanding of all strands of mathematics - numbers as labels and for counting, calculating, and space, shape and measures (height, weight, volume, etc). So, it is a good idea for practitioners to visit the kind of shop that they plan to recreate in the role-play area and to use the visit to identify ways in which the children will be able to explore mathematics (see box).
