When planning to develop a role-play area, practitioners tend to concentrate on resources that will support children's creativity and early literacy. However, it is equally important to consider resources that will support children's understanding of mathematics.
Shops offer many opportunities to develop children's understanding of all strands of mathematics - numbers as labels and for counting, calculating, and space, shape and measures (height, weight, volume, etc). So, it is a good idea for practitioners to visit the kind of shop that they plan to recreate in the role-play area and to use the visit to identify ways in which the children will be able to explore mathematics (see box).
