Collection of mittens, paper, scissors, crayons or felt-tipped pens

Step by step

* Make a collection of mittens and let the children talk about why they wear them and when. Look at the different colours and patterns.

* Discuss what else comes in pairs such as gloves, socks and shoes. Count how many objects make a pair.

* Draw pairs of mittens on paper and cut them out. Make a variety of pairs in different sizes and colours and several pairs of the same size and colour.

* Mix up all the mittens. Encourage the children to sort them out into matching pairs.
