National Breastfeeding Awareness Week

Family and friends of young mothers will be encouraged to remind them of the benefits of breastfeeding during National Breastfeeding Awareness Week between 11 and 17 May. The Department of Health said one of the key messages of this year's awareness week, which focuses on young mothers, mothers-to-be and lower-income families, will be that mothers should not feel they are imposing on anyone and that they can breastfeed 'anytime, any place, anywhere'. The campaign will also emphasise that breast milk is less likely to lead to stomach bugs and provides complete nutrition for the first six months of life, and that 'every extra week of breastfeeding makes a difference'.
