Nursery chains: Nursery found 'unhygienic'

A nursery operated by one of the largest private providers is facing enforcement action by Ofsted after a damning inspection found it failed to safeguard children's welfare.

The quality and standards of care at Leapfrog Day Nursery in Reigate,Surrey, were rated inadequate following the inspection in May.

Inspectors found the nursery flouted hygiene regulations, with somestaff handling food without checking if their hands were clean.

The report said, 'Nursery rooms lack appropriate ventilation. Windowsare not always opened, preventing the circulation of fresh air in thebaby, pre-toddler and toddler unit. As a result, many rooms have a stalesmell. The water-stained ceiling in the pre-school and toddler units hasnot been replaced and has visible mould patches. This does not ensure aclean and healthy environment for children.'

Inspectors also said younger children did not have enough access todrinking water.
