Our place in the early years world

I felt I had to write to congratulate Nursery World on the eight-page pull-out 'A world view' (4 September). Dr Helen Penn's feature provided fascinating reading that resulted in a few surprises - namely, that access to, and quality of, early years education is not always what we assume it will be. It also confirmed what I already knew - Britain may not yet be 'top of the class' when it comes to providing for early years, but we are not doing too badly at all. We are also very fortunate indeed when compared with many other countries, particularly in our stringent levels of registration and regulation, and especially within areas of health and safety.

As we continue to race forward, I think the early years sector needs to take time to reflect upon and acknowledge just how far childcare and early education has moved forward in Britain over the past few years, and congratulate ourselves simply for keeping up with so many developments.
