A new qualification is set to widen the employment prospects of home-based childcarers, including nannies and childminders.

Under Government rules, parents can only claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit if they use registered or approved childcare, which until now has excluded many home-based carers. But in future, practitioners attaining the first unit of the level 3 Diploma in Home-based Childcare (DHC) will complete the approval process.

The award has been developed by CACHE in conjunction with the NCMA and replaces the Certificate in Childminding Practice.

'All the centres that offered the Certificate in Childminding Practice have transferred,' says Susan Brakewell, CACHE operations manager. Many new ones have have signed up too.
