Books from publishers' series and one based on a popular children's television show are reviewed by Alison Boyle Small World series:

Small World series:

Eating, Bedtime!, Smiling and Celebrating

by Gwenyth Swain, illustrated with photographs by various artists

(Zero to Ten, 5.99)

The four books in this series all feature rhythmical text that weaves together bold photographic portraits focusing on children with their families. Mostly the books cleverly avoid sentimentality, and we are usefully shown the flip side of the emotion portrayed. In this way, as well as the many visions of smiling children, we can also observe them looking sad in Smiling and cross in Bedtime!, and we are offered suggestions for the reasons why.

A 'More about the pictures' section at the end of the books gives contextual information for each photograph. This includes setting, subject, and action, prompting readers to bring their own references to these personal pictures and stories.
