there are many different materials that can be used for modelling, but clay is special. With its cool, malleable texture and earthy smell, you really can imagine yourself back in the Stone Age, making your family's pots and bowls as you squeeze and mould and smooth.
Apart from enabling children to make some beautiful models, clay is great for letting off steam. Give a group of children clay to work with and all you will hear are the bangs, thumps and crashes as they pummel away. Clay is something you have to beat into submission - which is just what many children need after a day in the classroom!
