Wales rolls out first play policy

* Plans for the UK's first play policy were unveiled at the Welsh Assembly last week by the minister for children, Jane Hutt. Ms Hutt said the Welsh Assembly was committed to 'ensuring that all children have access to rich stimulating play experiences, free from inappropriate risk, and full of challenge'. Modern life and parental anxiety over children's safety had restricted chances for play, she said.

Ms Hutt said the Welsh Assembly was committed to 'ensuring that all children have access to rich stimulating play experiences, free from inappropriate risk, and full of challenge'. Modern life and parental anxiety over children's safety had restricted chances for play, she said.

'That is why we are determined to provide high quality play opportunities for all ages to help compensate for that restriction.' Outlining the Assemby's plans, she said the Government would work with its partners to build a more detailed strategy over the next year.

Funding for play has now risen to 2.8m this year, with Sure Start programmes providing story sacks and toy libraries for smaller children, while direct funding has gone to voluntary organisations to develop playgroups and out-of-school clubs.
