Brief intervention on maternal smoking: a randomised controlled trial

In this Turkish study 363 mothers were randomly assigned to a smoking cessation intervention aimed either at their children's health or at their own health, or to a control group receiving no smoking advice. Information on the health risks resulted in a significantly higher rate of cessation in the first two groups. The child-intervention group had a significantly higher rate of cessation and better post-intervention knowledge. The researchers conclude that maternal education on smoking should be focused on child health. Yilmaz, G and others. Child: Care, Health and Development 32(1):73-79, Jan 2006.
