1 Precious stones

Child-initiated

Encourage the children to bring back an interesting stone from their holidays and use these to create a focus of interest in the setting.

Resources

Tabletop display area with adjacent wallboard, wicker baskets, self-coloured fabric (such as, velvet or hessian), shallow sand tray, magnifying glass, plastic guttering, paper, pencils, crayons.

Preparation

* Outline the activity to parents and carers and encourage them to provide a photograph of where the stone came from.

* Ask staff to bring in stones or pebbles to start the collection.

Play suggestions

* Ask the children to add their stone to the display and to talk about their recent holiday or day trip. Where photographs are available, use these as a prompt for discussions too.
