Case study: Gemma

Gemma Hobson, 23, who has an NNEB, was appointed deputy manager of the Old Schoolhouse Nursery in Cambridgeshire just over a year ago. 'I don't think it is a lonely job. We do a lot of work on teamwork here but, of course, I am aware of the things I can discuss with the staff. If you see people outside the nursery then you just don't talk about work.

'When I first came here I made no secret of the fact that I wanted one day to manage my own nursery. First I worked in the nursery room and then became supervisor of the nursery room, and then I joined the schoolroom and ended up supervising it.

'I am High/Scope trained, so I have been doing the training for that in the nursery and that helps with the management role because I am used to observing, and as an NVQ assessor you get used to giving feedback.
